Do Not Lose Yourself While Life Is Changing

Life has a way of changing when you least expect it. A new job. A graduation. A move. marriage. parenthood. retirement, illness. The loss of someone you love. Some transitions are exciting. Others are painful. Most are a little of both. The biggest challenge during times of change is not simply adjusting to a new routine. It is making sure you do not lose the person you are while everything around you is changing.

Psychologist Nancy Schlossberg reminds us that a transition is not just the event itself. It is how that event changes our routines, relationships, roles, and even the way we see ourselves. That is why two people can experience the exact same life event and walk away with completely different experiences. The difference is not the transition. It is how they respond to it.

Most transitions happen in three stages: an ending, an in-between season, and a new beginning. The ending asks you to let go. The in-between, often called the liminal space, can feel uncertain and uncomfortable. It is the season where you may question your direction, your confidence, or even your identity. Yet it is also where the greatest growth happens. The new beginning arrives when what once felt unfamiliar becomes part of your life.

The mistake many people make is becoming so focused on surviving the transition that they forget to be intentional about who they are becoming. Instead of asking, "How do I get through this?" ask: Who do I want to be on the other side of this? What values do I want to hold onto?

What parts of myself do I refuse to lose?

Schlossberg's Transition Theory offers a simple framework to help you stay grounded during change by focusing on four areas:

Situation: What is happening, and what can you control?

Self: What strengths, values, and experiences can you rely on?

Support: Who can encourage and guide you?

Strategies: What healthy habits and actions will help you move forward?

Transitions may change your circumstances, but they do not have to change your character.

Be intentional about protecting the habits, relationships, and values that matter most. Stay connected to people who remind you who you are. Give yourself permission to grow without feeling pressured to become someone you are not.

Every transition is an invitation—not to lose yourself, but to discover a stronger, wiser version of yourself. Life will continue to change. Careers will evolve. Relationships will shift. Seasons will come and go. The goal is not simply to survive the transition. The goal is to walk through it without leaving the best parts of yourself behind.

At Stacked Intent, we believe transitions are opportunities to grow with purpose—not lose yourself in the process. Whether you are facing a career change, a new season of life, or an unexpected challenge, we offer coaching, workshops, practical tools, and resources designed to help you stay grounded, build resilience, and move forward with intention. No matter where you are in your journey, remember this: change may reshape your circumstances, but it does not have to redefine who you are. Be intentional about becoming the person you are meant to be.

It’s about the journey, not the destination
